Neuro-Linguistic Programming what is it and how can it help?

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a range of tools and therapeutic techniques, that are designed to help us overcome our issues and change the way we see the world. It can also optimise the way we think, engage with our lives and successfully achieve our goals — brilliant!

NLP is a way of reprogramming the mind and making lasting subconscious changes.

By addressing issues at a subconscious level, changes are made more quickly, easily and permanently than by using will power alone.

The mind and body are a complex hive of activity, with a continual stream of thoughts, pictures, feelings, physical processes and activities. Most of these are running on autopilot.

Some experts suggest that the average person has around 80,000 thoughts each day. Each of those thoughts activates pictures in our minds, and triggers off associated feelings and memories. Some of these feelings influence our behaviours.

An example of this is feeling hungry and moving towards food, this is a functional response to a physical need. We can also move towards food when we feel an uncomfortable emotion, that we wish to avoid. This can become the basis for emotional eating, a negative and dysfunctional response or habit, that is done in reaction to a psychological need. Here eating is used to soothe or suppress negative feelings, rather than providing the body with necessary fuel and nutrients.
In this case, NLP can work by interrupting the pattern of behaviour (or existing  programming), and offer an alternative way of behaving (reprogramming) when faced with the trigger — in this example, it is uncomfortable feelings and emotions.

As previously mentioned, we are often running on autopilot. NLP can make us aware of our thoughts, language and behaviours. It can then help reprogram us to think, speak, and behave in ways that will help us to achieve our goals, rather than unconsciously (or consciously) sabotage them.

NLP can be used to remove bad habits, and also to install positive ones!
