FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS

Family Constellations what is it and how can it help?

What is Family Constellations?

Family Constellations is a fascinating and powerful therapy, that mainly looks at family or relationship issues. It enables people to explore both their relationships to their family of origin, and their current family or relationship. It allows a recognition of difficult entanglements, and a resolution of issues that these bonds may have generated. It can help us to clarify patterns within the family, and the implications that these patterns have on our own lives, or the lives of our children.

Our attitude towards life and our view of the world is often shaped by our family. Here we learn the first rules and norms. Some of our family's rules and beliefs have been in effect for generations, and can influence our feelings and actions. We often absorb these influences, without even realising it. These influences can affect our attitudes, beliefs, emotions, and ultimately, our actions and behaviours in life and toward others. 'Have tos', 'shoulds', 'ought tos', shame, guilt, self-criticism, and judgement often stem from our families and our upbringings. How we've been brought up can affect how we see ourselves and what we believe is possible for our lives.

A Family Constellation gives us a new perspective of our family dynamics and of our feelings towards the other members. We are able to see painful experiences, taboo topics or beliefs within the family from an outsider's point of view, and this can help us to regain balance, and move on in a positive manner.

How does a Family Constellation work?

In a workshop, to represent the family members, or aspects of a system to which the person belongs (such as a group or business), other non-related participants are used. In individual sessions, family members or system aspects can be depicted by figures, cushions, pieces of paper, material, or symbols.

The person seeking resolution of an issue chooses where to place their representatives, including someone or something to take their place in the constellation. They can then step back and see their dynamic from the outside, and start to work on resolving their situation.

Working with an issue using the Constellation process typically involves one session lasting between 1 —2 hours, but can need more.
